CAMSHAFT AND DRIVE GEAR REPLACEMENT - CONTINUED

CLEANING
1.
Remove gasket material from camshaft rear cover plate and mating surface of cylinder block.
WARNING
Dry cleaning solvent P-D-680 type III is toxic and flammable. Wear protective goggles and gloves
and use only in a well-ventilated area. Avoid contact with skin, eyes, and clothes and DO NOT
breathe vapors. Do not use near open flames or excessive heat. The solvent's flash point is 200F
(94C). If you become dizzy while using dry cleaning solvent, get fresh air immediately and get
medical aid. If solvent contacts eyes, wash your eyes and get medical aid immediately.
Compressed air used for cleaning or drying purposes, or for clearing restrictions, should never
exceed 30 psi (207 kPa). Use protective equipment and exercise caution to avoid injury to person-
nel.
CAUTION
DO NOT touch vehicle surfaces of camshaft with bare hands after cleaning. This can cause rust to
form, which will damage camshaft. Lubricate camshaft with clean engine oil before handling.

Clean camshaft in solvent and dry with compressed air.
INSPECTION
1.
Visually inspect camshaft as follows. If these conditions are found, replace camshaft.
a.
Lobes: cracks, scratches, or other damage.
b.
Nose: burrs.
2.
Visually inspect camshaft drive gear as follows. If these conditions are found, replace gear.
a.
Gear teeth: chipped, broken, or cracked.
b.
Gear bore and keyway: burrs.
3.
Measure camshaft as follows. If camshaft is not within specification, replace camshaft.
a.
Bushing journal outside diameter: 2.8331 to 2.8352 in. (71.960 to 72.013 mm).
