Section III. CRANKSHAFT MAINTENANCE

Shop equipment auto-maintenance and repair, fm suppl no. 1
Lifting device (150 lbs capacity)
Flywheel housing and rear seal cover removed.
Oil pan and suction tube removed. (Refer to page 4-57.)
1. WITH ENGINE ON MAINTENANCE
Do not pry on main bearing caps to
ROTATE ENGINE BOTTOM SIDE UP.
free them from cylinder block.
2. DISCONNECT CONNECTING RODS (10).
Use two hex capscrews (6) to work main cap
a. Mark each rod cap (1) according to cylinder
d. Remove main bearing caps (5).
b. Remove two nuts (2) from connecting rod bolts
4. REMOVE CRANKSHAFT (9) AND BEARINGS (7),
(8) AND (11).
Tap bolts (3) with plastic hammer to loosen rod
a. Using suitable lifting device, remove crankshaft
(9) from cylinder block in direct upward motion.
d. Slide each
b. Remove and discard main bearings (4) from
seven bearing caps (5).
3. REMOVE BEARINGS (4) AND CAPS (5).
Remove and discard main bearings (7) and (8)
from cylinder block.
a. Mark each bearing cap to assure that each is
installed in same position at assembly.
d. If necessary, using a 3/16 in. pin punch, drive
piston cooling nozzles (14) from bearing saddles
b. Remove fourteen hex capscrews (6) from seven
main bearing caps (5).
