NOTE
If cleaning with abrasive pad has not removed old gasket or sealant material, it may be necessary to
steam clean cylinder block.
2.
Remove cylinder block from rebuild stand and place in cleaning tank as follows:
a.
Install main bearing caps nos. 3 and 5.
WARNING
Cylinder block is heavy. Lifting device must have sufficient capacity to lift cylinder block. Failure to
follow this warning may result in death or injury to personnel.
b.
Using lifting sling, remove cylinder block from rebuild stand and place in cleaning tank.
WARNING
When using steam cleaner, wear protective clothing and eye protection. Hot steam will cause seri-
ous burns.
Compressed air used for cleaning or drying purposes, or for clearing restrictions, should never
exceed 30 psi (207 kPa). Use protective equipment and exercise caution to avoid injury to person-
nel.
c. Ensure all oil passages and oil drillings are clean and free of foreign material. If cylinder block is NOT to be used
immediately, coat with oil and cover to prevent rust.
d.
Remove cylinder block from cleaning tank, steam clean, and dry with compressed air.

Clean cylinder liners as follows:

CAUTION
DO NOT use any abrasives in ring travel area of liner. Liner can be damaged.
a.
Remove scale and rust from liner using brush or abrasive pad.
b.
Lubricate inside of liner with clean engine oil and allow oil to soak in for 5 to 10 minutes.
c.
Wipe excess oil from inside liner with clean lint-free wipes.
d.
Continue to lubricate inside of liner and wipe clean until no gray or black residue shows on wipes.
